The Research and Development Center for Radiation Technology (VINAGAMMA) was established under the Decision No.159/QD-BKHCNMT issued on February 14th, 2000 by the Minister of Science, Technology and Environment and managed by the Government Decree No.115/2005/ND-CP (Organization Chart). It is located in Linh Xuan Ward, Thu Duc District, Ho Chi Minh City, about 20 km from the city center (Direction to VINAGAMMA).
The gamma irradiator at VINAGAMMA is a multipurpose industrial scale type SVST-Co60/B. It was designed and fabricated by Institute of Isotopes Co. Ltd. (Hungary) and has been put into operation since March 15th, 1999 for two main purposes of sterilization of medical products and pasteurization of foodstuff.
VINAGAMMA possesses the following laboratories for Research and Quality Assurance and Quality Control: Biological laboratory, Physico-Chemistry laboratory, Physico-Mechanical laboratory and Dosimetry laboratory.
The utilization of ion radiation for sterilization of medical products and pasteurization of foodstuff has a lot of advantages: No deformation and deterioration of processed products, no toxic residues left in irradiated products, processed products can not become radioactive, no need of unpacking for processing and assuring the highest sterile level of processed products

For the purpose of help to farmers, especially when drought happens frequently in the recent years, VINAGAMMA has studied and developed successfully a product, named Gam-Sorb. Apart from utilization in agriculture as water sustainer, soil humidity conditioner, and enhancement of effective use of fertilizer, Gam-sorb can be applied in environment treatment, additives in cattle-feed.
